Historical towns of Minas

About ten years ago I went with my sister and my parents on a trip to some historical towns in the State of Minas Gerais, in Brazil.  There went to 5 towns: Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Mariana, Congonhas and Sao Joao del Rei. I was so impressed and amazed by the buildings… it was like traveling back in time, with all the colonial buildings and baroque churches and chapels.

Well, I wanted a theme to exercise my line-and-wash abilities (well… watercolor can be quite challenging) and I picked some pictures I took on that trip and made some work. The good thing about those pictures was that I took them myself and I knew exactly what I wanted to grab in the picture. Although I know I need to develop more my watercolor skills, I am quite content with the results. I even intent to put them in frames and give to my parents as a memory gift.

“Gold and Liberty. With these words, we may condense the backdrop to these Minas Gerais towns, which, during the rebellious 18th century, were home to the brilliant, inspiring thoughts of independence from Portugal. Diamantina, Ouro Preto and Tiradentes are the places in which Brazilians remember their historic past, their identity and above all, their dreams.”

Congratulations! I love your line and wash drawings!! I have travelled fairly extensively in Brazil and your drawings not only brought back many beautiful memories, they captured the essence of the historic buildings. Beautiful!
